The Belize National Football Team made its country proud after defeating Nicaragua with a late dramatic winner yesterday. Belize needed a win to qualify for the Gold cup that will played in July in USA. They did exactly that with that a 2 to 1 result in favor of Belize.
They also had to wait on the results of Costa Rica vs Guatemala. That game was a tie and so all that meant was that Belize made it to the Gold Cup. What an exceptional performance for Belize, we will never forget this. This is a historic victory for Belize and their first ever in that tournament.
Costa Rica and Guatemala wrapped up the group stage at the UNCAF Copa Centroamericana on Tuesday with a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Nacional, leaving the Guatemalans set to play for fifth place on Friday and giving Belize a place in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup.Costa Rica, Guatemala tie; Belize to Gold Cup
It wasn't long before the host - already into the semifinals by virtue of wins in its first two matches -- was pushing forward in numbers.
In the 11th minute, Jairo Arrieta took advantage of defensive imprecision from the Chapines, and slammed a shot past goalkeeper Cristian Alvarez into the net for the 1-0 lead, which would last through half time. It was the Columbus Crew forward's tournament leading second goal.
The visitors, knowing they needed a win to advance to the semifinals, attempted to push forward throughout the second frame. The clearest early opportunity, though, was for Costa Rican forward Randall Brenes, who pushed his header just wide on 69 minutes.
Guatemala would continue to work with industry, and Jose Manuel Contreras finally equalized in the 90th minute with his first-ever goal in the competition.
The tally got the Guatemalans a share of the points, but couldn't get them through to the final four.
The Chapines finished Group A competition in third place with three points, one less than Belize, which qualified for its first Gold Cup.
The next opponents for Costa Rica and Guatemala will be decided after a draw later this evening to determine the teams that finish either second or third in Group B between El Salvador and Panama.
